Pole-to-Pole aviator crash lands
February 22, 2004
AN amateur aviator who attempted to circumnavigate the globe over the North and South Poles made a crash landing today on his way home.
Gus McLeod, 49, crashed in a field about 130km north of Buenos Aires, Argentina, after the plane's engine sputtered and quit at 1800m and would not restart.
He was not injured, his spokesman Bruce Fries said. The plane sustained minor damage.
McLeod left Marambio Research Station in Antarctica on Wednesday, crossed Drake Passage and landed in Ushuaia, Argentina. He landed on Thursday in Buenos Aires.
McLeod had been hoping to be the first pilot to fly pole to pole in a single-engine airplane. He left College Park on December 29 for a trip that would have been roughly 45,000km.
McLeod made two attempts to reach the South Pole, but was forced to give up when his wings iced over, making it hard to control the plane.
