KARI Demonstrates Drone Swam Flight Technology at Independence Hall in Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of Independence Movement Day

□ Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) demonstrated the in-house developed drone swam flight technology at Independence Hall to reflect the noble meaning of the independence movement on the 100th anniversary of the Independence Movement Day.

ㅇThe demonstration presented in front of People’s House at the Independence Hall had 100 drones showing the shapes of “3.1 Jeol,” “100th Anniversary,” Korean flag, and Korean peninsula in swam flight.


□ KARI was able to secure many original technologies, such as drone precision location recognition technology, communication with multiple drones, and precision control technology, through the development of the outdoor swam flight technology.

ㅇThe swam flight, in particular, requires the precision location recognition technology so that multiple drones can operate without collision. KARI developed the swarm flight system based on the RTK-GPS (Real-Time Kinematics-GPS)* high-precision location recognition (tolerance of around 10cm) technology and upgraded the communication technology and precision control technology with improved communication capacity and implemented redundancy of the internal system to assure the safe flight of drones.
*RTK-GPS: Unlike conventional GPS, the technology can measure the accurate positions in the level of centimeters in real-time using the correction value of the carrier phase of the reference station that has the precise position information.

ㅇAs a result, the technology enables swam flights not constrained by the number of drones, as is the case of the swam flight technology in the United States (Intel) and China (Zerotech).


□ KARI is currently developing technologies that converge the developed core technologies of swam flight with AI to apply the drone swam flight in public safety such as searching for missing person and patrolling.

ㅇThe technology can improve the efficiency of searching for missing person by having many drones divided into groups to examine a large area separately and record each section in various angles.

ㅇKARI has transferred the in-house developed outdoor drone swam flight technology to the industry to create new markets in performance and cultural events using drones.
