Expansion of Foundation for Comprehensive Space Cooperation between Korea and France
- 3rd Korea-France Space Forum -

□ The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) held the 3rd Korea-France Space Forum with Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI), French Embassy in Korea, and CNES (Centre national d'études spatiales) at Conrad Hotel in Yeouido on May 17.

ㅇThe Forum is the platform for cooperation created as a result of the agreement between Korea and France for comprehensive cooperation in aerospace. This year’s meeting is the third one since the first meeting was held in 2016.

ㅇ More than 120 people including the government officials, professionals from the industries, scholars, researchers, and students in the aerospace field from both countries attended the meeting to share the current status of space development and discussed opinions on space development and personnel interchange.

□ The Forum was held with the theme of “Expanding the cooperation network / Comprehensive cooperation partnership.” It began with the opening addresses by the Ministers from both countries (You Youngmin of the MSIT and Agnès Pannier-Runacher of the MESRI) and followed by a panel discussion by experts and business meetings.

ㅇ The sessions included ▲ Public strategy in the new space era (civil space development status and space security), ▲ Space and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (convergence of AI and big data with the space industry), ▲ New space industries (launch vehicle and satellite), ▲ human advancement (exploration and climate change), and ▲ cooperation in education (human interchange). Experts in the space field from both countries participated in each session for presentation and discussion.

ㅇ The global companies as well as startups in the space industries from both countries including KAI, Hanhwa Aerospace, KT Sat, Nara Space Technology, Contec, and SI Analytics from Korea and Arianespace, Airbus, Thales Alenia Space (TAS), SAFRAN, and GEOFLEX from France participated in the Forum to discuss the ways to cooperate.

ㅇ The Forum will also introduce the program to train and interchange students and PhDs in space institutes operated by governments or universities in both countries as a way to expand the human network for the future.

□ “New Space in which the private sector enterprises are leading the space development is the latest trend. I expect that the cooperation with Korea, which successfully commercialized the 5G mobile communication technology for the first time in the world, and France, which is the renowned leading country in space, will have a positive impact on the development of space industrial ecosystem in both countries,” the Korean Minister of Science and ICT, You Youngmin, said.
