The Era of Wide Open Space, Imagination into Reality
- The 1st Korea Space Week to be held for five days beginning on July 17 -

□ The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) announced that it would hold the 1st Korea Space Week (Space Week) to publicize the importance of space development and examine the direction of space policy in Korea while commemorating the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing (July 20).

ㅇ The event hosted by the MSIT and jointly organized by KARI and Dongascience will be held for 5 days from July 17 to July 21 and expected to be attended by more than 1,000 people including the space professionals, students, and general public.


□ New Space, which refers to the change of space development leadership from the government to the private sector, the acceleration of the business model innovation, and technology innovation through convergence, has recently become the trend in the leading countries in the space field.

ㅇ The purpose of this event is to share the world trend in New Space and discuss the direction for the business, government, and research institutes in Korea.

ㅇ Moreover, it will feature the Space Science and Culture program to help young people to have more interest in space.

□ On the first day (July 16) of the Space Week, students from 17 elementary schools nationwide will participate in the special lecture on the moon and the contest of making a rocket model hosted by the Young Astronauts Korea and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute will hold the Space Talk Concert with focus on the moon.

□ The Korea Space Forum to be held in Conrad Hotel in Youido from the second day (July 18-20) of the Space Week will include the presentation and discussion by about 40 distinguished guests including Mr. Etienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy in Luxembourg.

ㅇ The first day of the Forum shares the world trend in New Space, such as Luxembourg which is promoting the space industry as the core national industry, Arab Emirates which intends to become a space powerhouse through the emigration to Mars plan, Space IL in Israel which attempted the first lunar exploration by the private sector, and Amazon which provides the cloud service of ultra-small satellite information.

- In addition, it will feature the briefing sessions of space business startups in Korea and the discussion, led by the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), of the current status and future direction of New Space in Korea.

ㅇ The second day of the Forum will feature business meetings between Korean ventures and the US-based investors such as Space Angels and the academic symposium in aerospace to examine the new pioneering areas for the aerospace industry worldwide and discuss the technology trend and prediction in space launch vehicle and satellite.

ㅇ The third day of the Forum will feature the lecture to general public and students to introduce the plans and outcomes of space exploration , the physical theory related to the lunar exploration and the latest research trend in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing.


□ The last day of the Forum will feature the Star Talk lecture at the Daegu National Science Museum by Dr. Jani Radebaugh (Brigham Young University and NASA Advising Scientist) for science teachers and students and various space experience programs such as lunar area naming event and live quiz show at the National Science Museum.


□ “I hope that the Korea Space Week event will be an opportunity for the people to have interest in space development and examine the space development policy in Korea through many cases of space development in other countries. Based on the Korea Space Industrial Strategy established in January this year, the government will provide all the support needed to make the space industry be a new growth engine for the national innovation,” Minister You Youngmin of Science and ICT said.
