- First Observation Image from Cheollian 2A Successfully Received-

□The Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT)(Minister, You Young Min) and the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA)(Administrator, Kim Jong seok) announced that the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) and the National Meteorological Satellite Center had successfully received the first images recorded by GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (Cheollian 2A) at 12:10 a.m. on January 26.

ㅇKARI performed the post-launch orbit transfer* operations of Cheollian 2A that was launched on December 5, and securely placed Cheollian 2A in the target geostationary orbit, 128.2 degrees east in longitude with an altitude of 36,000km, on December 21.

ㅇKARI and the National Meteorological Satellite Center are currently inspecting the weather and space weather payload to prepare for nominal satellite operations. It plans to use the images sent by Cheollian 2A during the preparation period to test the functions of each part and inspect whether the satellite generates data that satisfies the performance requirements.
* Orbit transfer: Operation to change the orbit (or orbit change) of a flying object

□The first image sent by Cheollian 2A was a color image unlike the B/W images of Cheollian 1.

□Cheollian 2A generates global images with a spatial resolution that is four times higher than Cheollian 1 every ten minutes (every two minutes for an image of the Korean Peninsula).

□The images sent by Cheollian 2A will be serviced to users in Korea and the Asia Pacific region in real-time beginning in July.
