Successful Achievement of the Goals of Phase I of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II Development Project

□ The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MISP) disclosed that it has successfully built the engine test systems, assembled the 7-ton class liquid engine, and completed the ignition/combustion testing, the main goals of Phase I of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II development Project (March 2010 ~ July 2015), and is now set to begin Phase II of the project (August 2015 ~ March 2018).

ㅇ The Korea Space Launch Vehicle II Development Project Evaluation Group headed by Dr. Seong Ki Min of the Agency for Defense Development conducted a comprehensive evaluation of Phase II through site surveys and review meetings of each technology area,

ㅇ It reported that the main goals of Phase I, including construction of the engine testing systems and development of the 7-ton class liquid engine, have been achieved and that the project is ready for Phase II, which involves the development of a 75-ton class liquid engine system and the launching of a test launch vehicle.

□ Phase I included the goals of completing the preliminary design, building the test systems and developing a 7-ton class liquid engine. Helped by the diligent work of professionals from the institute and industry, these goals have been achieved and the project is ready to continue with Phase II.

ㅇ As regards the design area, the Evaluation Group completed the review of the system requirement design, system design and preliminary design (December 2014), and the detail design began in January 2015.
ㅇ To verify the main components and system of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II, 8 test systems including the 3rd stage engine combustion test system and the combustion chamber test system were built for use in the performance verification of the main components and the engine itself.

ㅇ For the development of the 7-ton class liquid engine, the performances of the main components - such as the combustion chamber, turbo pumps and gas generator - were checked prior to their assembly at the end of April. The first ignition/combustion testing of the 7-ton class liquid engine was successfully carried out on July 22, 2015.

- It is significant that the verifications of Korea’s first test systems and the launch vehicle engine were successfully completed, bringing the development of Korea’s own Space Launch Vehicle II a step nearer.

- The final verification of the 7-ton class engine will include more than 160 tests in the next three years in order to verify the engine’s performance (500 seconds for combustion time).

□ In Phase II, combustion testing of the 75-ton class liquid engine will be conducted in June 2016 to check its performance; the detail design of the test launch vehicle will be completed in February 2017; and the integrated test of the test launch vehicle will be conducted in October 2017, before launching the test launch vehicle in December 2017.

□ Moreover, the MISP disclosed that Dr. Ko Jeonghwan of KARI has been appointed to lead Phase II, including development of the 75-ton class liquid engine and the launch of the test launch vehicle.
