‘Multipurpose Satellite 3A’Successfully Launched

□ The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) disclosed that the Multipurpose Satellite 3A was successfully launched from the launch base in Yasni, Russia at 03:08am on December 26, 2015 (07:08am on December 26 in Korean local time).

○ The rocket was separated from the Multipurpose Satellite 3A around 15 minutes after it was launched, and the satellite established initial communication with the Troll Satellite Station in Antarctica after 32 minutes to confirm the satellite’s trajectory and the unfolding of the solar cell plates. It also communicated successfully with the Svalbard Satellite Station in Norway after some 87 minutes.

○ 5 hours and 56 minutes after the launch, it established its first communication with the KARI Satellite Control Center in Daejeon at around 13:04 on December 26 (Korean time) to confirm that the overall condition of the satellite was satisfactory.

□ The Multipurpose Satellite 3A will continue its mission after the initial operation, such as the satellite and payload functional test, for 3~6 months.

□ The Multipurpose Satellite 3A is a state-of-the-art earth observation satellite equipped with high-performance IR sensors and an optical lens with the highest resolution in Korea. Its mission is to observe the earth round the clock for disaster management and environmental monitoring.

□ The MSIP disclosed that it will efficiently continue its work on national strategic space development programs related with domestic industrial promotion and public safety, including the systematic development of satellites that reflect the national demand for various types of satellites.
