Promotion of G2C Service by Using Satellite Information for Public Services

At an event held in the conference room of the City Hall on August 18, 2008, Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) and Daejeon Metropolitan City have concluded a cooperation agreement for the utilization and support of satellite information for public services.

KARI and Daejeon City agreed to cooperate with the local administrative G2C Service by applying satellite information to public services.

KARI has developed and presently operates the multipurpose satellite KOMPSAT 2, an earth observation satellite. In February 2008, KARI was designated as the institute in charge of stimulating distribution and utilization of satellite information by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology which led to the opening of the Satellite Information Research Institute.

Daejeon City uses different types of spatial imagery information in a wide range of administrative tasks such as environmental monitoring, disaster management, urban landscape analysis and others. The city will provide administrative information as well as experience in these areas, while KARI will provide satellite data from KOMPSAT-2 and related technology to stimulate the utilization of satellite information for public services.

KARI and Daejeon City plan to set up a consultation committee consisting of experts to promote cooperative relations through educational programs, workshops and the exchange of information necessary for the utilization of satellite information for public services.

With the conclusion of this agreement, KARI has laid the foundation for the utilization of satellite information in the public sector, and Daejeon City can expect to be capable of providing high-quality administrative services in a broad range of areas as well as cutting costs by using satellite imagery from KOMPSAT-2 in environmental monitoring, remote sensing, emergency management and urban change monitoring.

KARI plans to expand cooperation with local governments through cooperation agreements, beginning with Daejeon City, in order to boost the use of satellite information in the public sector. Detail negotiations are underway to implement this plan.
