The Korean Astronaut Program is carrying out core work to develop manned space technology that will train Korean astronauts, as the need for research is on the rise.

Looking into the major tasks of The Korean Astronaut Program Division, it plays an important role in selecting an astronaut who fulfills all the requirements of "a sound mind and body, expertise, scientific common sense, and team spirit". These are basic conditions needed for an astronaut. The KAPD also performs the function of training astronauts so they can practice all the scientific knowledge and technologies required of the crew of a space station or space shuttle.

The office is also conducting preparatory and developmental activities in order to provide the foundation for the successful realization of Korean manned space technology, by performing  issions encompassing all the tasks in space as well as payload, launch, and returning to the earth operations.

In addition to the advancement of science and technology and the heightening of Korea's international status through securing manned space technology as well as the creation of economic value from the far-reaching ripple effects throughout industrial circles, this program is an industry with very important social and cultural significance. This program inspires national self-respect and pride into all Koreans and provides an opportunity for the younger generation to foster a dream of scientific technology, by successfully producing an astronaut.
